PPL reveals most-played Sgt Pepper tracks
To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Sgt Pepper, PPL has published the most played song from the Beatles album.
The album’s closing opus ‘A Day In The Life’ takes the number one spot, a track also covered by the likes of Jeff Beck and Barry Gibb. ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ comes in at number two, whilst the title track is the third most-played song.
‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ – famously covered by Joe Cocker and Glaswegians Wet Wet Wet – takes fourth spot and ‘When I’m Sixty Four, one of the first ever songs written by Sir Paul McCartney aged just 16, comes in at number five.
Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album was released 50 years ago on 1st June.
The music licensing organisation took the results from PPL data by UK radio & TV broadcasters covering the period 2000 to 2016. Both the number of plays and total played duration are used to rank the tracks in the charts.
Tim Silver, Head of Music Reporting Services at PPL said: “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club’ is arguably one of the most important album of the 1960s, as well as one of the first ever concept albums. Its impact on popular music since its release cannot be understated and we are delighted to be able to honour its fiftieth anniversary with this most-played chart. Although ‘A Day In The Life’ might be a surprise number one for some, it is one of the album’s standout tracks and a perfect finale for what is a truly ground-breaking collection of music.”
