Radio Yorkshire to cease DAB broadcasting

West Yorkshire based Radio Yorkshire is coming off DAB and going online only.

The station is located opposite Leeds United FC and covers football and Rugby League matches.

Director of Broadcasting Sam Brydges said “As an independent DAB only station we have faced many issues with the changing landscape in Yorkshire. This includes not being able to broadcast on DAB directly into Leeds, a key area for the business, for 14 months of our three years on-air.

“The style of content we create means a lot of our programming is now available in-vision live or on-demand online with ever-growing numbers. I would like to thank the amazing staff who have given their all to Radio Yorkshire and the listeners for their loyalty and contribution to a unique DAB station.”

Radio Yorkshire launched in 2014 when its predecessor Yorkshire Radio closed after Leeds United Chairman Ken Bates left the club. He set up the original station during his time at the club.

Radio Yorkshire stopped broadcasting officially in Leeds on DAB when the regional MXR DAB multiplex closed in 2015.

To call a Leeds radio station Radio Yorkshire was wrong from the off. Seriously, people living in other parts of Yorkshire do not want to hear about Leeds, Leeds & Leeds.
