Ken Bruce leaves BBC 2 Radio – who will assume the mantle?

Ken Bruce is leaving BBC Radio 2 next month after an amazing 31 years of broadcasting.

The 71-year-old broadcaster has stated that it is time for someone else to take over.

Although fans of Bruce will be disappointed that he will no longer be presenting on BBC Radio 2, they will still be able to hear him on Greatest Hits Radio starting April 3.

The potential successors

As Bruce moves to Bauer Media, the question remains of who will replace him on BBC Radio 2. While no official announcement has been made, there are several names rumoured to be in the running.

According to bookmakers Coral, Gary Davies is the favourite to take over with 2-1 odds. Davies has filled in for Bruce in the past and presents on BBC Radio 2 every Saturday from 8-10 pm. Scott Mills is the second favourite with odds of 3-1, as he currently has a weekday slot on BBC Radio 2 at 2 pm and has previously covered for Bruce when he was on holiday.

Anita Singh, the Telegraph’s arts and entertainment editor have expressed that she feels the job should go to Gary Davies. Meanwhile, radio consultant Paul Chantler has stated that BBC Radio 2 is going for a younger audience these days and that’s why Rylan Clark, who has a wide appeal thanks to his TV profile, could be a contender for the position. Clark currently presents a weekly show on BBC Radio 2 on Saturdays from 3-6 pm and hosts a TV quiz called Couch Potatoes. Clark has expressed his admiration for Bruce, calling him a beautiful and lovely man to be around. He went on to say that he will miss having conversations with Bruce over a beer while they were both abroad at the Eurovision event.

Why the sudden leave?

On January 17th, 2022, a major shock was felt by radio listeners across the country when popular radio presenter and DJ Ken Bruce announced that he would be leaving BBC Radio 2. Ken had been hosting the current iteration of his show since 1992 and had been working at the BBC since 1978. He is well known for his daily quiz, PopMaster, which is widely popular among listeners. The show used to include other competitions like Spin It to Win It and Words Don’t Come Easily, but they were dropped after a phone-in scandal in 2007. PopMaster was later reintroduced in early 2008.

Ken’s future has already been decided, as he is set to move to a rival station in April. However, his successor has yet to be announced. People are curious about why he has decided to leave and what his new job is, as well as whether PopMaster will be joining him in his new venture. Ken explained his decision to leave by saying that after 45 years of full-time broadcasting on BBC Radio, it was time for a change. He mentioned that the decision was entirely his and that new opportunities had arisen that would allow him to continue his career in a different way. Ken expressed his gratitude for the time he spent at the BBC and for the support that helped make his mid-morning show a success.

Ken’s legacy

Ken is 71 years old and lives with his third wife Kerith near Thame, Oxfordshire. He will be joining Greatest Hits Radio, a station that celebrates the biggest tracks from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He will be hosting a brand-new show on this station, playing the biggest hits from some of the most iconic artists of all time, including Blondie, Queen, George Michael, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Elton John, and Whitney Houston.

Greatest Hits Radio is home to presenters such as Martin Kemp, Pat Sharp, Kate Thornton, Paul Gambaccini, Andy Crane, and Jenny Powell. The announcement of Ken joining Greatest Hits Radio was received positively by the industry, with Ben Cooper, chief content & music officer of Bauer Audio UK, praising Ken as a broadcasting legend having left a hugely significant mark on the industry.

A statement from Greatest Hits Radio confirmed that PopMaster will be joining Ken in his move, and Ken expressed his excitement about getting started with his new show, which will still include PopMaster and all the great records that listeners know and love. He looks forward to starting his new adventure and having listeners join him for his very first show in April.

An icon like Ken will keep entertaining his fans from another station. PopMaster is his brainchild which is why he’ll continue doing it albeit from another station. The love between Ken and Radio 2 might have slumped, but there’s no love lost between him and his fans who are looking to hear more from Ken.
