The presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Jenni Murray, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She made the announcement to listeners of her programme today, and will undergo an operation between Christmas and New Year, followed by appropriate treatment.
Jenni says: "I’ve known about the diagnosis for a couple of weeks now, it was diagnosed up in Macclesfield when I was on my holidays. Treatments are very good these days and I know quite a bit about this disease thanks to working on the programme… fingers crossed, everything should be alright."
Barnsley-born Jenni, 56, has been hosting Woman’s Hour since 1987. She was presented with an OBE for services to broadcasting in 1999. She joined the BBC as a local radio reporter in Bristol in the 1970s and subsequently worked for Newsnight and Radio 4's Today Programme.

"Jenni's voice is so familiar she is like a friend. I wish her well during her treatment and look forward to hearing her again when she is well enough," one listener wrote.
"I was particularly moved by the simple way in which Jenni announced her diagnosis at the end of the broadcast today," another said.
