North Ayrshire DAB network launches local multiplex

New local DAB coverage is now available across North Ayrshire and parts of West Renfrewshire.

Caledonia TX Ltd has commissioned its North Ayrshire DAB digital radio network, bringing additional digital capacity and new services to listeners across coastal and inland communities.

The network operates from two transmission sites, with transmitters at Routenburn Golf Club in Largs and a second site near Dalry.

Caledonia TX says the dual-site approach has been designed to improve reception across a wide area, supporting coverage along the coast while also reaching further inland.

Director Alex Jenkins said the multiplex completed a period of detailed testing ahead of going live. “We have been testing and checking our signal pattern over the past week and we are very pleased with the results,” he said.

Early reports indicate reception as far south as Irvine, with inland coverage reaching Paisley, exceeding initial expectations set during planning and licensing.

Several services are already broadcasting on the multiplex. Celtic Music Radio, Lomond Radio and Lomond Country are live, while Rock.Scot is currently testing ahead of a planned full-time launch.

Interest from other broadcasters is continuing. Saltcoats-based 3 Towns Radio has applied to Ofcom for a C-DSP licence, and discussions are under way around a proposed new community station serving Largs and Millport.

Talks are also ongoing with Now Ayrshire Radio, Polskie Radio Scotland and the Voice of Islam. Jenkins confirmed that further capacity remains available for stations looking to join the multiplex.
