Community radio careers promoted in school pilot

Community radio was represented at a new local media careers event for primary school pupils in Bolton.

Rebecca Steers, Director of the UK Community Radio Network and Station Manager of NLive Radio, joined journalists, editors, reporters, photographers and broadcasters at Washacre Primary Academy for the inaugural Inspiring the Future of Local Media showcase.

The event introduced children to the range of roles involved in producing local stories, programmes and other content, with volunteers explaining their work and the routes available into the sector.

Rebecca encouraged community stations to take part as the project develops and to build links with schools in their own areas.

She said: “It was fantastic to see young people excited by local media, and by how many are already aware of local radio.”

Rebecca added: “The UK Community Radio Network would encourage community stations to get involved with the Inspiring the Future project now and as it grows, and also across the UK encourage stations to build relationships with their own local schools to inspire more young people into the media.”

The Bolton event was part of a pilot delivered by Inspiring the Future through the Government’s Discover Creative Careers programme, with funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the News Media Association.

Charlotte Thurston, Director of Programmes at Inspiring the Future, said the pilot would be taken to more North West schools in the coming months.
