Global’s Cash Call has given away £1.5 million to Rachel from Surbiton, described by Global as the biggest prize in UK radio history.
Broadcaster Kate Garraway made the call on Friday afternoon, telling Rachel that she had won the record amount after building up to the announcement.
Kate told her: “Nobody has ever won, in radio history, more than this amount of money, £1.5 million pounds. So I’m going to cut to the chase, Rachel, and I’m really sorry to say your life has changed forever.”
Rachel, a civil servant from Surbiton, said she initially struggled to take in what had happened, describing the amount as “incomprehensible”.
She added: “It’s such a huge amount of life changing money that it’s really hard to comprehend.”
Rachel said she would like to use the money to move house and relocate to the coast, explaining that the win would give her more freedom to choose the home she wanted rather than being restricted by what she could previously afford.
Cash Call launched last November and Global says three millionaires have previously been created through the promotion, with Andy from Essex, Lucy from Northampton and Lee from Bexleyheath among its winners.
The competition offers cash prizes each week, with a celebrity calling one selected person at 5pm on Fridays to tell them they have won.
