A group of young people are taking over BBC Radio 5 Live this weekend for an hour-long special voiced entirely by children aged 3 to 19.
The Kids On Hope Street is an independent production that’s come out of the BBC North Creative Kicker Fund to support indies in Northern England.
Children and young people living on roads called Hope Street around the UK feature in the programme which offers a look into the hopes, fears, aspirations and dreams of the next generation. Recording was done in the run up to last month’s elections on around a hundred Hope Streets the length and breadth of the country.
The documentary airs on Saturday night and we’re told it features a diverse range of people and views – from a 13 year old member of the youth parliament hoping for a career in politics, to a 3 years old who wants to be a pirate.
Commenting on the idea behind The Kids On Hope Street, 5 live’s Deputy Controller, Jonathan Wall, said: “The Kids On Hope Street provides an interesting snapshot of what our young people think about the world today, and what the future looks like through their eyes.”
York-based Soundscape Productions have made the programme after being commissioned through the 5 Live scheme to support Northern independent production companies ahead of their move to Salford this year. The project set aside £40,000 for commissions on the network in 2011/12 from production houses in the North.
