Low-power FM to become legal

Finally, the low power FM transmitters which allow us to transmit our personal music players around the house or car are set to become legal in the UK.

Low power FM transmitters can be purchased from five pounds upwards, and include the popular iTrip which typically uses a frequency around 87.7Mhz FM. They are currently unauthorised for use in the UK and Europe because of the potential to cause interference to broadcast services.

Ofcom is responding to growing consumer demand for the use of these devices and has led negotiations in Europe to develop a harmonised approach to their use by late autumn 2006.
