Sonys – 7 more winners

The second batch of seven Sony Radio Academy Awards have been handed out – and 6 more were won by the BBC. Christian O'Connell broke the trend, picking up one for Virgin Radio's competition "Who's Calling Christian?"

So – award number 9 was the Music Programme Award… Gold went to BBC Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe Show, produced by Smooth Operations. The show's recently been changed and now is co-presented by Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie.

Next the Promo Award, recognising outstanding station production, went to BBC Radio Five Live for The Ashes.

There then followed three top prizes for BBC Radio 4 – "Lorilei" took The Drama Award; "1966 And All That" took Gold for The Comedy Award; and "The Reunion", a Whistledown Productions programme presented by Sue MacGregor won The Speech Programme Award.

Christian O'Connell picked up his 5th Sony Award in 6 years, for the Virgin Radio competition "Who's Calling Christian?" – interrupting a BBC run of 7 wins in a row.

Finally for now, Richard Park handed a Lifetime Achievement Award to BBC WM sports journalist and phone-in presenter Tony Butler, who started out as BRMB's first sports editor in 1974.
