BBC Radio 6 Music Celebrates African Music

BBC Radio 6 Music Celebrates African Music this month with a weekend of special programming from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 January.

The station says the centrepiece of the weekend is Mali Music, a documentary presented by Gemma Cairney.

Gemma travels to Mali to meet some of its musicians who were affected by the troubles early last year in the north of the country.

Paul Rodgers, Head of Programmes for BBC Radio 6 Music says: “BBC Radio 6 Music is a place where presenters can explore their musical passions. Across a range of shows, 6 Music Celebrates African Music does just that and is the first of a number of opportunities planned for 2014 in which our trusted guides will come together to share insight and enthusiasm for a great body of music.”

The special weekend starts in Tom Ravenscroft’s show from 7 to 10pm, which features a guest mix from Dave Maclean of Django Django, who will be mixing Afrobeat and Malian sounds.
