Bauer to launch country music radio station

A new radio station called Downtown Country has been given permission to join the Northern Ireland DAB multiplex.

The new service will be a sister station to Bauer’s Downtown Radio and Cool FM, already operating in Belfast. Downtown Country is described as “A genre based music station playing primarily a range of country style music (including American and Irish) aimed at all adults” and will be provided by Bauer.

Downtown Radio already broadcasts three hours of country music each evening, from 1900 – 2200. The multiplex variation request suggests the new station will start on or after April 13th.

Bauer’s predecessor Emap previously operated a country music station from Glasgow called 3C. It closed in March 2007.

A full-time national country music station for the UK is currently proposed by Listen2Digital in its D2 bid, but the genre does not feature in Bauer’s joint bid with Arqiva and UTV.

And BBC Radio 2 is currently operating a pop-up DAB station known as BBC Radio 2 Country.

This service will be available online as well as on the Northern Ireland licensed area multiplex at 80Kbps Mono.
