Ofcom award Barrow licence

The long battle for the new FM licence serving Barrow-in-Furness and the surrounding area has been won by Abbey FM.

Original RSL group Abbey FM is backed by CN Group (owners of The Bay which cover the area already), The Local Radio Company (owners of nearby 2BR in East Lancashire) and The Radio Business who are involved with a number of new licence bids including the recently launched 107 The Bee in Blackburn.

As only two companies applied for the licence, the company not successful are Barrow Local Radio who were originally backed by Laser Broadcasting.

Ofcom expects the station to begin broadcasting at the earliest opportunity and no later than two years from this award date.

Ofcom will publish a statement setting out the key determining factors for the award of this licence shortly. The licence will be issued for a twelve year period.
