BBC appoints Yorkshire boss

The BBC in Yorkshire has a new Head of Region responsible for all television, radio and online services across the county.

Leeds-born Helen Thomas takes up the post this week, moving from from Hull, where she was in charge of BBC output for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Andy Griffee, Controller, BBC English Regions, said: "I am delighted to announce that Helen Thomas has been appointed as the new Head of the Yorkshire Region, based out of Leeds."

"Helen returned to the BBC almost seven years ago from commercial radio and since then has been the Editor of BBC Radio Humberside and, for the last two and half years, she has been Head of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Helen will move into her new role when her successor at East Yorkshire is appointed and in place. We will be advertising the role in the next week or so. In the meantime, Ian Cundall will be the Acting Head of Yorkshire Region."

Ms Thomas began her career as a trainee reporter at Radio Aire in Leeds. She joined the BBC at BBC Radio York in 1985, then moved to Yorkshire Television in Leeds and Minster Sound before rejoining the BBC as Editor of BBC Radio Humberside in 1999.

She said: "I am sad to be leaving Hull and the great team who work in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, but very excited at the prospect of taking up the post in Leeds and returning to BBC Yorkshire as head of region."
