Comic legends join Radio 4

Harry Enfield and Andrew Sachs head the line-up for a new BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Douglas Adams' novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Harry will play the title role in the 6-part series to be broadcast later this year. It will be produced by the man behind Adams' radio remake of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, Dirk Maggs.

This will be the first time eccentric detective character Dirk Gently has been made into a broadcast programme. Author Douglas Adams died suddenly of a heart attack in 2001. He became a household name for the Hitchhiker's Guide series whihc were made into radio, TV and film versions.

Fawlty Towers' Manuel, Andrew Sachs, will appear in this new production – along with Lord of the Rings actor Billy Boyd and Peep Show's Olivia Colman.

Detective Dirk Gently specialises in finding lost cats until he meets an old friend and "is drawn into a four billion-year-old mystery that must be solved if the human race is to avoid immediate extinction".

A BBC spokesperson described Dirk Gently as having an "unshakeable belief in the interconnectedness of all things".
