Community Radio reaches 100

UK community radio has passed a significant milestone, with the 100th station in the country going on-air. The two latest stations to launch that bring the total to 100 are 7 Waves Community Radio in the Wirral and Calon FM, serving Wrexham.

The Community Radio Order 2004 paved the way for Ofcom to license the new types of radio stations which must be operated on a not-for-profit basis. Since March 2005 Ofcom has awarded licences to 162 community radio services, although this total includes services which have been awarded a licence but not started broadcasting yet.
Ofcom is currently part way through its second round of community radio licensing which is likely to be completed next year.
