Star Radio in the north east has been given Ofcom approval to present Craig Andrews' Durham breakfast show from its Darlington studios.
This means all content 24 hours a day will be broadcast from outside the transmission area.
In asking for the change, programming boss Mark Reason told Ofcom: "Only some 18 miles separate the present studio centres in Darlington and Durham City and the Darlington studios are just one and a half miles outside the southern edge of the Durham MCA.
"The character of the service will remain unchanged."
In approving the move, the regulator said: "The request is not regarded as a substantial change to the character of service as it is believed the change perceived by listeners will not be great, and that their expectations will be met."
