DIGITAL: BBC 6 Music stays up

All eyes are still on BBC 6 Music to see if the network can hold on to the audience peak it enjoyed during recent uncertain times.

The digital only station, the future of which is now secured by the BBC Trust, has increased its audience slightly this quarter taking it to 1.20 million weekly listeners.

Elsewhere in the digital listening world, Radio 1Xtra posted a record 806,000 weekly listeners – up on last quarter’s 600,000 and last year’s 547,000, and Radio 7 has a weekly reach of 1.05 million – up both on last quarter (949,000) and last year (884,000).

The BBC Asian Network’s weekly reach is 462,000 listeners, from 437,000 last quarter and 357,000 last year.

Commercially, Planet Rock’s weekly reach has soared to its highest ever at 783,000 and 5,333,000 total hours of listening. MD Jonathan Arendt: “Another set of record figures for Planet Rock with continued growth in both hours and reach and the largest increase in audience since 2006. This demonstrates the increasingly broad appeal of the station and the enduring nature of great rock music.”

Jazz FM is down slightly on reach but up on hours, and is happy with its new website. Richard Wheatly, Chief Exec, says, “this is an exciting time for Jazz FM, the launch of our new streamlined website reflects our commitment to ensuring that we offer the very best across all our listening platforms.
