Bohemian Rhapsody voted ultimate song at Radio X

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is the ultimate British song according to Radio X listeners, in the station’s second annual Best of British poll.

Bohemian Rhapsody toppled Oasis’ Wonderwall off the top spot, moving up 11 places to be named the best British song of all time by Radio X listeners.

Radio X also revealed how its presenters voted in the poll with Chris Moyles voting for Shed Seven’s ‘Going For Gold’, Russell Brand opting for ‘Sweet and Tender Hooligan’ by The Smiths, Johnny Vaughan backing Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’, Gordon Smart choosing The Beatles’ ‘A Day In the Life’ and Lliana Bird picking Blur’s ‘Song 2’.

Almost 25,000 votes were cast in Radio X’s Best of British poll, with Queen taking the number one spot as the Top 100 was revealed on Easter Monday, 25 years since the band staged the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium on Easter Monday in 1992.

Queen’s Brian May said: “Big thanks to Radio X listeners for voting ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to your all time number one! Who could have known in 1975 that the sounds on that particular piece of recording tape would still be echoing loud and clear in people’s hearts over four decades later! Rock on!”

Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno backed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as his ultimate British song, telling Radio X: “Every time I hear that I still go ‘wow!’ They released it as a six-minute single and so it is ridiculous but that’s kind of why it’s so amazing. It’s a monster tune.”

The Best of British results were revealed on air today (Monday April 17th) by John Kennedy, host of X-Posure on Radio X.

Matt Deverson, Managing Editor of Radio X, said: “In a Top 100 that features truly great British tunes from across the decades, this year we’ve seen Radio X listeners give a nod to nostalgia. Queen are a British institution and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a behemoth of a song, respected by artists and loved by music fans.”
