After an emotional day of broadcasting, Wave 105 said goodbye to its listeners on the south coast at 10pm on Thursday.
Mentions for the end of the station have been heard on-air and seen online for the last couple of weeks, with presenters making no secret of its closure as Greatest Hits Radio takes over.
And on Thursday, each presenter signed off one-by-one in their own unique way. Only Rick Jackson and Mark Collins remain part of the schedule when national output replaces 26 years of established local shows and features at 10am Friday.
A ‘best of‘ montage played 20 minutes before closedown, followed by the male voice-over of Wave 105, Rich Cope, chatting with the male voice-over of Greatest Hits Radio Rik Scott who knocked on the door wanting to come in, before being asked to take care of Wave’s listeners.
The audio was created by Tim Allen, who was Wave 105’s Head of Production for the last 17 years.
The final song, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye by Soft Cell, then played followed by the sound of waves along the south coast, then the 10pm news.
Listeners have also been very vocal on the switch, with many vowing to abandon the frequency following the move, mentioning they will switch to other stations such as Heart, Nation Radio South, and other local services.
Thousands of people reacted to the news posted by the station just a few weeks ago.
The station had been serving listeners across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, plus parts of West Sussex and Wiltshire since 1998. It ended with its highest market share ever recorded.
Its consistency has been the secret to its success, constantly doing well in RAJAR and providing a local radio service across a unique region of Britain.

What a lovely gesture! đđ Thank you to everyone whoâs messaged us. Iâve loved being part of such an amazing radio station. Itâs going to be weird not setting the alarm this Saturday morning. â° #Wave105 pic.twitter.com/Cce93UiFkR

Just about to do my last ever Sunday morning Golden Hour on Wave 105. Itâs been emotional! pic.twitter.com/0PJX7zPpyL

Well i've scheduled pretty much every hour of Wave 105's music since May 2008 (around 138,700 hours). I can quite honestly say the last hour this Thursday evening was the most difficult hour to scheduleđł

A deserved outpouring on the final day of Wave 105. Itâs tough to connect with every listener through local / sense of place when youâre so big. Wave excelled because the station was a warm, homely hub of its own patch backed by a bright, modern vision. Sending love to the team.
