Ofcom offers offensive language advice

As promised, Ofcom has published new guidance for radio broadcasters on the use of offensive language.

It follows a summer of complaints by listeners from a handful of stations broadcasting songs with swear words in them.

The regulator says the Broadcasting Code rules on the use of offensive language on radio remain unchanged. However, the new guidance is designed to explain these rules in more detail and assist radio broadcasters in their compliance with them.

Particular focus is given to lyrics in music tracks, live music performances/interviews/studio conversation, and speech and comedy content.

Stations ranging from Capital FM to Rinse FM both had recent complaints against them for not checking the content of songs played.
