Classic FM Live cancelled for safety reasons

One of Classic FM’s biggest events was cancelled Thursday evening after firefighters were called to the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Reports say there was a small fire in the basement, but others suggest it was just smoke. Classic FM tweeted: “Due to a small suspected fire in the basement of the Royal Albert Hall, tonight’s Classic FM Live has regrettably been cancelled.”

Presenter Margherita Taylor was spotted outside the venue and a photo of her with a sad face made it to Twitter (above). The plug was pulled just six minutes before the event was due to start.

A spokesman from Royal Albert Hall told the Telegraph they had evacuated the building on the advice of the fire brigade. They said: “There was no actual fire but an electrical fault in the basement created a lot of smoke. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

The event would have seen a number of performers including 25-year-old pianist Joseph Moog and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

A Classic FM spokesperson told RadioToday: “Due to a small suspected fire in the basement of the Royal Albert Hall, the Classic FM Live concert was regrettably cancelled. The Fire Brigade arrived swiftly and everyone was evacuated from the building safely.”
