Community station Coast and County Radio has requested a power increase from Ofcom.
The service says it wants to extend its transmission coverage into Ryedale, encompassing the towns of Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, and Helmsley, which it says is a strategic move that aligns with the evolving needs and demographics of the region.
Coast and County Radio is currently licensed to cover Scarborough and Whitby, and this extension would give them an extra potential audience of 54,700 people, in an area to the west of Scarborough, towards York and Thirsk.
The application reads: “By expanding our coverage into Ryedale, Coast and County Radio strengthens its commitment to fostering connections, facilitating dialogue, and empowering local voices.
“Whether it’s broadcasting community events, hosting discussions on important local issues, or amplifying the voices of residents, Coast and County Radio plays a pivotal role in building a stronger, more cohesive community within Ryedale.”
Coast and County Radio currently operates on 200w.
It adds that it would like to build a physical studio and hub in the heart of Ryedale, providing Coast & County Radio with a visible presence and a sense of belonging within the community.
Support for the move has been received from local organsations including museums, Lions, cafes, businesses and a Town Council.
The will need to request a change of Key Commitments if the power increase is granted, as it currently is only licensed to serve Scarborough and Whitby.
Ofcom will accept representations up to one month following publication before they make a formal decision on the request. Representations can be sent to broadcast.licensing@ofcom.org.uk.
