Tindle keeps radio as newspapers sold off

Tindle has sold its newspaper portfolio, with its radio division remaining outside the deal.

The group has agreed to sell Tindle Newspapers Ltd, including 30 print titles and associated digital platforms, to a joint venture between Iliffe Media Group and the Fowler family.

Tindle CI Broadcasting, which operates the company’s radio interests, is not part of the transaction and remains under existing ownership.

The newspaper portfolio spans Wales, the West Country, Surrey, Hampshire and the Isle of Man, including titles such as the Cornish and Devon Post, Mid Devon Advertiser, South Hams Gazette, Farnham Herald and Isle of Man Courier.

The deal will see the titles move into continued private, family ownership, with the new owners highlighting a focus on long-term sustainability and digital subscription growth.

Owen Tindle said: “We believe this change of ownership represents the best strategy for our much-loved local brands to succeed in the long term.”

He added: “Given the scale and speed of digital transformation within our industry, we are passing the baton to owners with the resources and expertise to ensure the long-term sustainability of quality local journalism.”

Iliffe Media Group already operates a range of local and regional titles and has experience developing subscription-based models, including through its Highland News and Media joint venture in Scotland.

David Fordham, non-executive director at Iliffe, said: “Our priority will be to accelerate digital subscription growth while preserving the trusted local reporting that readers rely on.”
