North East radio presenter Simon Grundy is celebrating a broadcasting milestone today as he reaches a quarter of a century presenting the Breakfast Show on 103.4 Sun FM Radio.
When Simon started his run on breakfast, The Radio Authority regulated the industry, Emap had just bought Metro Radio Group a couple of years prior, GWR won the Digital One national DAB multiplex, PopMaster started on Radio 2, and Google was born.
Reflecting on his time at Sun FM Radio Simon said: “I jumped at the chance to return home when the opportunity arose in 1998 as it’s where my family were from.
“My Great Uncle Reg worked at Monkwearmouth Colliery, where I would become the match-day announcer at the Stadium of Light which was built on the site whilst my Great Grandad was an electrician in the shipyards, the site where the Sun FM studios were built so it all seemed to come full circle.
“It took us a few years to build an audience that for many years eclipsed all the other radio station’s Breakfast Shows but my biggest achievement was receiving an award from Macmillan Cancer Support for the all the awareness and money we raised over the years in the region for them.”
Neil Greenslade, Programme Director added: “Simon is an absolute legend of North East broadcasting and makes it effortless to connect with audiences across the area every day. Huge congratulations from everyone at Nation Broadcasting on reaching this milestone.”
